On August 24, Ukrainians in Belgium gathered together in Brussels to mark the 34th anniversary of Ukraine’s Independence. The event welcomed everyone Belgians, foreigners, and Ukrainians and became a symbol of solidarity and reminded the world of the daily struggle Ukrainian people live through for freedom and independence.
The event featured compelling speeches on independence, solidarity, and resilience by Vsevolod Chentsov (Head of the Mission of Ukraine to the EU), Andrius Kubilius (EU Commissioner for Defence and Space), Dmytro Vasyliev (Chargé d’Affaires of Ukraine in Belgium), and Mykhailo Dzivitskyi (President of the Ukrainian Voices). Additionally, a moment of silence had been held to honour those, who gave their lives during the Russian-Ukrainian war. Former Prime Minister of Belgium, Alexander De Croo, also voiced his unwavering support for the Ukrainian people by his presence.
The city square was filled with life by music, dancing, poetry, traditional Ukrainian cuisine, creative workshops, and cultural activities for children and adults. Joining online, Refat Chubarov, Head of the Crimean Tatar Mejlis, powerfully emphasized that Crimea is Ukraine and that the Crimean Tatar people stand side by side with Ukraine until the very end. A special highlight for attendees was the performance by the “Cultural Forces of Ukraine,” a military-cultural unit of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, showcasing the richness of Ukrainian culture.
